Condoms
Condoms are not new and we have not invented them!
The first condoms were manufactured out of fish’s swim bladders by Greeks on Crete about 2000 years BC. In the Middle Ages people protected themselves with sheep’s appendixes. Cassanova is the most famous protagonist who used small linen bags that were dipped into special tinctures. The descendants of Cassanova should be happy that he had used this special way of contraception. Later, when Charles Goodyear had invented vulcanization condoms started to be popular. Unfortunately they were thick as bicycle tires and smelled disgusting. They were sold by hairdressers and other ‘discrete’ shops. Today we can buy condoms in many shops in different colors, shapes and sizes. Thanks to the scientific curiosity of our ancestors.
How many condoms do you need?
There are scientists who intensively researched human sexual behavior. They found out, that an average couple has 2.8 times sex per week. We cannot use decimal numbers which is why we round up to 3. If we say that in every society at least 70% of the population could be sexually active if they had a matching partner, then our couple would need about 150 condoms per year. We multiply this with half of 700 Mio citizens in Europe take 30% discount and end up with a requirement of the incredible number of 36,7 billion condoms. Since there are a lot of other contraceptives and people did not actually have that much sex, only about 210 million condoms per year have been sold In Germany with 80 million inhabitants.
Condoms are good – Why should you use condoms?
- On open air concerts condoms are pulled over microphones to protect them from rain
- You could put your mobile phone in a condom when you are at the beach. That way it cannot be damaged by sand or water.
- You could use condoms as water balloons and throw them at your mean neighbor
- Condoms are used as teat substitute for feeding small mammals that have lost their mother and now need to be brought up by humans.
- If a man uses a condom while masturbating in a car the seats will stay clean.
- Condoms are still the only protection against HIV and other unpleasant STDs.
